Affordability
For an average $100 round bale that loses 50% of its dry matter, nutrition, and value in the first year, the Bale Blanket can pay for itself in just a few seasons. 0% interest payment plans are also available right in checkout.
round bale weather damage
Nearly 50% of the hay in a large round or square bale is in the outer 8", which is the part of the bale most exposed to the elements (notice the amount of rain damage to this round bale immediately after a torrential storm). This means protecting the outside of your bales is critical to protecting your hay investment.
Round bales stored outside, uncovered on the ground, can lose up to 61% of their dry matter in the first year when stored outside. A study done by the University of Wisconsin showed that one of the best ways to save your hay was not just a barn -- it was to cover hay, which could reduce dry matter loss as much as 93% (from 61% to 4% loss or less), and that's the system we've pursued here at the Bale Blanket.
However, most outdoor round bale covers require a tractor or bobcat to lift the bale and put on that sleeve, or require the tarp to be "stapled" to the bale or anchored into the ground, easily coming out in bad weather and still not providing full bale coverage. The Bale Blanket requires none of that -- just throw it over, cinch the bottom, and enjoy a fully covered round bale.
We have stored our hay outside for a year or longer with Bale Blankets and our horses never knew the difference!
With the Bale Blanket, now you can have barn-kept hay, outdoors.

does mesh let the water in?
while the mesh will let a small amount of water into the flat side of the bale, it is minor and dries quickly. while our original bale blanket prototype did not have any mesh, we found the overall humidity levels were much higher underneath it, promoting mold. the best compromise was to allow a small amount of water through the mesh to allow for long-term airflow.

-
✓ the Bale Blanket protects that outer 8", paying for itself in approximately 3 round bales
built tough
easy to provide extra airflow
worried about trapped moisture? we have a quick fix (this works for regular tarps too, even if you don't have a Bale Blanket).
try this quick fix
It's easy to put an item underneath the Bale Blanket, on top of the bale, to provide extra airflow. You can use a bucket, feed pan, cinder block, small tire, or anything easily available to you. This will lift the tarp off the bale and provide excellent airflow over the top of the bale.
it fits more bales than you think
while designed to fit easily over a full 5'x5' bale, if you think your bales are larger, measure them exactly with a measuring tape -- most bales are smaller than you think due to settling and baler settings (a 5'6" x 5'6" bale may measure much closer to 5'x 5' in reality).
also, if your bale's measurements are different (say 5'6" x 4'6", but still come out to about 5'x5' total) that should work also!
need an adjustment kit?
We know not all round bales are fully 5'x5', so we offer an optional adjustment kit of 4 heavy-duty tarp clips and 3 quick-adjust ratchet straps. This allows you to quickly pull all four sides of the Bale Blanket both together and off the ground, in under two minutes for a secure hold on any smaller bales.
